Windermere in the Lake District National Park
Windermere (not to be confused with its near neighbour Bowness on Windermere) is an attractive and vibrant town at the heart of the southern lakes. Its location makes it an ideal base from which to explore the breathtaking scenery of the Lake District National Park and further south to Morecambe Bay. The peace and tranquility of this beautiful area can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Windermere takes its name from England’s largest and arguably prettiest lake, which lies around a mile from the town centre. Lake Windermere offers a wide range of sporting and leisure activities, such as sailing and steamer excursions. Many spectacular walks start from Windermere, among them Orrest Head. Reputedly, this was the first place Alfred Wainwright (one of the Lake District’s most famous residents) visited when he arrived in Windermere in the 1930’s. He was so inspired by the view over the lake and the mountains and fells beyond that he eventually moved to Cumbria and became a legend.
In addition to a good range of shops, restaurants and bars, Windermere and its neighbour Bowness on Windermere offer a wide range of attractions and facilities for the visitor, including the Beatrix Potter Experience, the Lake Steamers, public swimming pool (just to the north of Windermere town), golf course (just to the south), cinema, theatre, off-road driving experience and marina and ferry across the lake.
Walks around Windermere in the Lake District National Park
‘Airedale’ in Windermere is a perfect starting off position for local walks. These can vary from a gentle stroll down through wooded areas to the lake shore or upwards to Orrest Head and beyond.
It is only a very short walk from the house to the main bus route for those venturing further afield without a car. You’ll find maps of local walks, including the above and details of other attractions in the house.
Other walks include: Orrest Head, Biskey Howe and Lakeshore via ferry
